John Small, Enrichment Director, APC
John brings fourteen years of senior living experience to Plush Mills and has always had a natural love for supporting older adults. What inspires him most is the chance to build meaningful relationships with residents and create programs that reflect their interests, spark joy, and encourage independence. As Enrichment Director, he designs a calendar that feels vibrant, inclusive, and tailored to a community with wonderfully varied passions.
Creativity is the value that guides John’s work. Serving a population of more than 100 residents challenges him to think outside the box, meet people where they are, and find new ways to engage every individual. His background in culinary arts, therapeutic recreation, and multiple levels of care—including memory care, personal care, skilled nursing, and independent living—gives him a unique, well‑rounded perspective on what makes enrichment meaningful.
John holds associate degrees in Culinary Arts and Therapeutic Recreation and is an Activity Professional Certified through NCCAP. He began his career in senior living as a high‑school server before moving into roles such as front‑of‑house manager, expeditor, line cook, sous chef, Activity Assistant, and eventually Activity Director.
Outside of work, John loves anything outdoors—beach days, surfing, swimming, and summers spent in Cape May. He’s also an artist who creates acrylic pieces for friends and family, a former Irish dancer who once placed third in the country, and a passionate food lover with a professional cooking background. His perfect day is anywhere along the coast with good friends, sunny skies, and something delicious to eat.
